“Saying Goodbye in their own Way. Playing Outlawed tunes on Outlawed Pipes…”

I’ve used this post title before, and today it just makes sense to use it again.

I’ve written this post before in my head. So many times that I thought it was a dream that’d never come true.

“Dreams are dreams for reasons. If shit was easy everyone would alway get exactly what they wanted. Everyone wants to get to the mountain top but no body wants to walk the journey to get there. Cause its hard and sometimes its very lonely.”

Do you remember who said that? It was me. It was me cause I know how hard manifesting a dream is. I know how impossible at times things seem. When you want to be successful so bad that you taste it. You dream about it. You want it so bad that you refuse to let anyone tell you it wont happen.

For me I didnt want this thing for myself. I wanted it for something I believed in, I wanted it for the thing that meant the most in the world to me.

I wanted it for my community. My Ma taught me small town Iowa values and those morales are part of who I am. They will never leave me and they’re so simple. Its not about you… Its about something bigger and if you don’t see that then your gonna miss out on life.

I will be resigning from my position as Head Coach at Crossfit West Seattle to go out and finally start my own gym.

This choice has only been possibly through the love and support of my friends and family.

“You know Zach, I dont think you know how to fail.”

The friend that told me that will NEVER know how much that means to me. I can’t tell you what it was like to hear this from someone you respect. But it’s not just about me. It’s about something bigger and one of my best friends was the one to remind me that even I need help. And that if this is truly about something bigger then I need to expect that help.

“It takes a Village Zach.”

I can’t do this alone. Pride is sometimes truly the greatest flaw any person can have. Thank you, it’s because of you that I know I need the support of those around me. That if this is gonna  be what I’ve always wanted for my community I have to expect its help.

My pride is placed in check. And because of that fact I was able to receive something that will be burned into my memory for the rest of my life.

Last Sunday my Mom and I tricked my Dad into bringing me a ladder at a building he’d never been to. When he stepped out of the his rig I put my hands up in the air and said, “This is Mine.”

He hugged me.

My Dads never hugged me like that.

“I’m proud of you.”

My Dad has never said that to me. He told me once in High School he was “proud of me for acting like a man.” But he has never looked at me like he did Sunday.

He was proud of me.

Pride may be a flaw sometimes but a Fathers pride in his son is beyond measure.

I know things wont be easy. But because of those who support me I don’t know how to fail.

I know there will be hard times. But because of those who support me I know it takes a village to build a dream.

I know pride is a sin. But I know from my Father that being proud of something or someone can mean more to that person then anything in the world.

Come Monday the key in my hand will go into a different lock. That lock will open the door to Morgan Junction Crossfit, my gym. This is the start of a new exciting chapter in my life. One I know I couldn’t write without the support of my friends and family.

My dream was to open a gym for everyone in my home town. A place where the outside world turns off and that time belongs to you and nothing else matters. Monday I get to start living that dream.

  1. Z! I had no idea you didn’t already have you own place! I was just getting off watch on the ship and this popped up, good on ya!

Is your spot still in Seattle because if it is I’ll have to visit!?!

If it’s not your crew better send you off in style!

  2. Mileage. Lots of mileage

Driving down from Bellingham to Seattle or god knows where maybe 3 times a week for wrestling meets, tournaments and when I could for practices.

Driving to West Seattle on weekdays in rush hour traffic after work, be it in Federal Way or Bellevue even though I live in Rainer Beach.

    Sleep.

Waking up at 6AM even though I’m not a morning person at all. Waking up on Saturdays when I rather be in bed.

    Comfort

Driving to the middle of Skyway at night to work out in a gym the size of a copy room. Working out on bulkheads and in carports in the weather. Working out in a basement where you wore a hoodie and sweats not because it seemed fashionable or badass but because it was that cold.

    Time

Staying up late to finish a blog post. Coming in on a Sunday to count when things didn’t right the day before. Getting to a comp hours before the scheduled check in just to make sure. Staying late because we couldn’t leave while someone else was going.

These are just a few of the things I have done over the years because of Z. But I didn’t do all these things just because he is my little brother. Rather I did them for another reason…

    I believe in Zach Filer.

    Always have and always will.

  3. Wow…this is awesome! Congratulations.

  4. The first time I crossed paths with Z was at Washington Sectionals a few years back. I was sprinting the rest intervals and hating life while some guy with kipping box jumps, a headband and a sick overhead kicked my ass all over that warehouse.

Did I ever mention that I made an arrangement for us that whoever won that day would coach the other? Well I did and I thank The Baby Jesus that the unmitigated disaster of my victory didn’t come to fruition that day.

You were made to make people strong. You’ve got intuition and a gift. My traps would follow yours through gates of Hell you glorious sonofabitch.

    Congrats Z!

  6. Awhile ago I told Ryan “when Zach opens his own place, I hope it’s that space” as I pointed to a shop space close to our house. Last night as we drove past that space, Z walked out of the building. Whaaaaa? But we’re not dumb and a stop after dinner confirmed what we suspected. Things look great and I can’t wait to get started! Congratulations, Z!

  7. this is fan fucking tastic!
    let’s get ready to rumble.

  8. I am so proud of you Zach. I can’t wait to sob it up 3/4s through a workout at the new place. Love, The Crier

  9. So damned excited for you Zach! It’s about time you really had “your house” in all it’s entirety. Can’t wait for opening day!

  10. Super proud to be here for this milestone and I have to say that I recognize that view in the picture as it is right around the corner. Can’t imagine a better addition to the block — if you need a hand with anything we’re literally a 800 meter sprint away, don’t hesitate to call on your neighbors. Welcome to the block & congratulations on the output of your hard work.

  11. Brenden Loyer Says:

    Z, FUCK YES!

  12. paulisdrunk Says:

To say I’m excited is an understatement… I’ve been excited for Filer to start his own gym for years, I knew it would happen one day no doubt about it, and now its here…. With a coach like that, in a community like that, great things are gonna come out of there. I hope to see everyone there.

Now on to my friend, never have I seen a bigger sense of pride on a persons face than over the last few days working on this place. Z and I don’t talk about emotion much but looking at his face the last few days I can tell he’s thinking, “finally! This is really happening and it’s mine.”

Proud of you man… Oh yeah one more thing, “The little hand says its time to rock and roll!!!”

  13. Congratulations, Z!

Nobody works harder for his athletes, and nobody deserves it more.

  14. Caragh Camera Says:

All the success in the world to you Z. Your parents brought up a good man. You took it the rest of the way, yes with some help from friends, but it starts from within…and its been oozing out of you since I met you.

  15. Some of you know personally and the rest of you can appreciate how hard it is to get a new venture off the ground–especially when you are coaching full time, and planning and running competitions on the side. It takes a lot of work and guts to make it happen.

I can tell from the comments already that there will be a ton of support from the community but I would urge everyone to tell as many people as possible about what will be the best place to train in the area hands down. All of us have been impacted positively by Z and we owe it to him to return the favor now and show up in droves and support MJC.

    Well done Z.

  16. I’ll never forget walking into the gym for the first few times thinking, “What in the hell did Blake sign us up for?!” At the time, I was perfectly content pounding in the hours on a treadmill at All Star, grinding out some sit-ups on an inflatable ball (WTF is that about anyway?), pumping some curls with a 15# db and calling it a day.

Never would I have imagined that these past two and half years would have been such a life changing experience. Never would I have imagined being part of something so much bigger: a family.

I’ll also never forget, crying after the first time I did a farmers walk, doing my first pullup, PR-ing by 60#s on a deadlift 2 days after running a marathon and competing in my first open. But the thing of it is, it’s not about the pr’s. It’s about doing things I never thought I’d be able to do. And that’s all because of the community that has been built inside those walls and the people who make the choice to come in every single day. It’s about Z pushing us to do our best and try harder even when we think we can’t push any more. It’s about our trust in him and his trust in us.

I am so excited to start making new memories in a new place and with new people. So very proud of you Zach!

  17. The reward for hard work is more work. Good thing it’s a labor of love. Congratulations, my friend.

  18. As many of you know, when I first came to the gym, I was unable to do most of the things we do every day. That’s pretty amazing, and I don’t take it for granted, not for a minute. Maybe that could have happened for me at another gym and maybe not. But I don’t think so, and here’s why:

Zach brings things out of you that aren’t just about the physical. When I had only been around a few months, I remember saying to David, “I don’t know what it is about this guy, Zach, but he makes me want to do better…even though most of the time he doesn’t even talk to me!” I’d never had a coach before, but David’s had lots of them. He said, “That sounds like a good coach to me.”

Zach makes you strive. He makes you reach. If you listen, he’ll teach you how to be disciplined and how to trust yourself.

I’m beyond excited for you, Z, and I look forward to hearing you in my ear at the new place.

    • Change is uncomfortable, Growth is uncomfortable.

Your vision is bigger than all of us can even fathom, and I’m so grateful for being part of this community you have put your blood, sweat, and tears into. We don’t tell you enough how much we appreciate you as a coach and friend….I’m sure I can speak for everyone and say Thank You for changing our lives for the better, and always believing in us when at times we can’t do that for ourselves. You have an army behind you, and we can’t express how proud we are that you’re living out your dream!

  19. Well, I didn’t make it through dry eyed! I have been waiting for this moment for at least two years. Dying to pay my check to you because that is what I believed in, you over everying else. Supporting the cause. The fire in your eyes did not go unnoticed and I could not be happier that your dream has come to fruition my friend.

We are big fans, and are excited to support your dream. Can’t wait to see what unfolds and ride the wave of your vision.

Let’s get some champagne crackin’!!! CONGRATULATIONS!

  20. When dreams become a reality it is because of hardwork and drive, and you are a fine display of both! Wishing you nothing but success. I have seen results in the way you have pushed my baby sister to do things I never dreamed she’d do. So proud of you both! Can’t wait for my Morgan Junction CrossFit apparel! XOXO See you soon!!

  21. Alison Jones Says:

YES! YES! YES!!!!!!!! Congrats Z!!!!! Could not be more proud or excited for you. Good things happen to good people:) I know we have been gone for over a year now, but the impact you made on Matt and I still is strong. Although I have new gym friends, I still feel more connected to the I/C because of this amazing community you have built. I know we all have similar stories….but Thank you for saving me from the hole that I was digging myself into…your time, energy, patience, and compassion will never be overlooked. Can’t wait to check the new place out!!!

  22. Sarah Horner Says:

Congrats Z! Hope your new place is everything and more that you have dreamed of. I’ll never forgot the first workout I had at CFWS. We had to partner carry a barbell with some insane weight 400m. It was digging into my back and I thought “this is pretty cool” and never looked back.

  23. My reaction to this news can be summed up by this little gem…

Morgan Junction home of the I/C!!! Shabooms!

Way to go Z and company. I will ride with you into the mists of Avalon…

  24. Congrats, Z…I figured the day would come when you started running your own box and that day has arrived…go get some!

  25. Wow!!! I too have been waiting for this and am so excited for you. An amazing accomplishment for an amazing coach. You can do this and more – and I am still in awe at your dedication to all of your athletes, at all skill levels. I won’t forget CFWS, and hope to come and visit the new box!!!!! Looking forward to watching this fold from afar. Miss you!

  26. A man in full. a beautiful thing to see. CF changed my life, and CFWS even more so. That place has been so special, because of the community that we all built there. It took everyone, but I don’t think it ever could’ve become what it has without Z.
What the fuck did I just say?
This community exists because of Zach Filer and his passion.
I’m so happy for you, so proud of you, so grateful to you.
    Thanks coach, and Godspeed.
I’ll see you soon. (Healing well!)
    Much Love, jt

  27. You and I talked about you opening your own gym even before you went to CFWS. Your time has come. It will be great!
I am so very, very happy for you. Looking forward to seeing you smile all the time now.
    See you Monday.

  28. Zach congrats, a major milestone in your life and all of ours! You have changed my life in so many ways. I look forward to sharing in your new adventure and continuing to challenge myself to become better and stronger! You have a great community of people that will be there to share in your journey…well done!

  29. Big Z,
Congrats on your new adventure,to thy own self be true
