“Shadow…”
Who do you see when you look in the mirror?
If it’s anything like what I see, we’ve got some work to do.
…And we’ll do it together.
You’re stuck with me, so don’t try and push me away.
Ya know, you and me, we’re never satisfied.
We’re our own worst enemy.
You feel neither strong nor beautiful,
Because we’re always looking forward, always wanting more from ourselves.
And you’ll never let what you give be good enough.
You know those demons…
They’re whispering all the time. I know you can hear them.
They sit on your chest when you’re trying to metcon.
They gnaw at your wrists when you’re trying to rack.
They say all the right things to break your spirit.
They know all your secrets.
But I’ll be there with my hand on your back.
I’ll push you even when you don’t know which way is up.
Because you and me, we just need to keep moving.
Brick by brick, we’ll build this.
We’ll work, even when there’s no one but me to see you.
Don’t be afraid.
Because there is strength even in failure
and beauty in the struggle.
And one day you’ll start seeing yourself the way I see you.
The flame, not the moth.
Strong,
Beautiful.
You’re not alone.
If your shadow could talk, would you listen?

Beautiful write up, Gogo. In the past that I’ve had you there to push or coach me, you always had a calm/confidence about you which you carry well as a coach or leader (ahem…I vividly remember the night I first met the prowler and sled pulls-barf)…you’re inspiring to say the least, and stating the obvious-Strong and Beautiful (as well as bootyful)

I first met Gogo after Z told me my KB cleans looked something like what Linc does. He said I needed help, and she was the one to do it. In one hour I went from an idiot trying to muscle a bell around to someone who could confidently move it. More importantly, I began to believe that I could actually figure this out….
That’s the thing about Gogo that amazes me most – how she can her own view in the mirror and apply it others (and not just me, it’s true for everyone around her).
It’s radiant, it’s powerful, it’s encouraging, and it really is beautiful.

Ah Margaux, this one made me cry my eyes out, I have to admit. It shot straight to my heart. I guess I’m not the only one with a voice in my head all the time.
Thank you for your words.

very well written! thank you for sharing this.
there are two competing voices in my head – one says “yes you can” and the other says “no you can’t”
it’s posts like this and people like you who give power to the ‘yes you can’ voice. thanks!
